Last Day on the Meseta

It was a lovely morning as we walked past wheat fields (all harvested except for stubble) and corn fields (brilliant yellow corn already dry on the cob, destined for lucky pigs and cows through the winter). Tall grasses waved in the sun, and here and there are small stands of cultivated pine trees and random scrubby oaks.

For the first time we saw horses on the Camino and imagine this would have been more the norm in earlier centuries.

We pass villages with interesting decorations inspired by the Camino,
One of the more unusual pilgrim rest stops served delicious watermelon, as well as the usual tea and coffee in a thermos, biscuits and whole fruit, all for donation only.

We saw a cross at the end of the rise, and the city of Astorga below. Beyond that are the Leon Mountains, and the region of Galicia a few days hence.

So, we say good-bye to the Meseta which was not nearly as dull or difficult as feared, and hello to our next phase of the trip.
