Breakfast of Champions

Leaving Estella early in the morning, we had only gone a couple of kilometres when we came upon a famous fountain. It's located at the first of the large wineries that we will no doubt see, but this one is a particular friend of the Camino. We could see a collection of other pilgrims hovering around and immediately thought "This must be it!"

Inside the gates there is the fountain in shined up copper and brass, one side for Agua (water) and one side for Vino (wine!)

Turning the left tap produced a flow of red wine that peregrinos caught and drank - some filling their water bottles but most using their scallop shells as a cup for a rare and lovely morning libation.

Above the wall, behind my head there, you might see the inscription, which is (loosely) translated to read:

If you want to arrive in Santiago
with Strength and Vitality
Take a mouthful of this great wine
And make a toast to Happiness!

Amen to that!
